Etsy Seller Shipping Insurance

What Etsy postage labels include, how the Shipsurance add-on works, and where seller-side coverage fits.

Contact InsureShip
Quick answer: InsureShip is integrated with Etsy (built with RapidFulfillment), so shipments for your marketplace orders can be insured. Marketplaces control their own checkout, so this is seller-side coverage, not a buyer add-on. Many Etsy labels include carrier coverage, such as up to $100 on USPS Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Ground Advantage. You can add Shipsurance coverage up to $5,000 at $0.80 per $100 domestic. Third-party coverage mainly matters for labels bought off Etsy and sellers who also run their own store.

What does Etsy already cover on postage labels?

The Shipsurance add-on

US domestic (and APO/FPO/DPO) coverage costs $0.80 per $100 of order value. International coverage costs $1.35 per $100 of coverage, per package. The maximum is $5,000 USD. Etsy routes the claim to Shipsurance, which handles the rest.

Where do gaps remain for Etsy sellers?

Labels bought off Etsy

Etsy's included coverage and the Shipsurance add-on apply to labels bought through Etsy. If you ship from your own carrier account or another tool, those packages need their own coverage.

Labels with nothing included

Global Postal Postage includes no insurance, so you have to buy coverage. Evri has no add-on at all, so £20 is the ceiling on that label.

UPS Ground Saver handoffs

Etsy notes that Ground Saver packages lose UPS liability coverage once they are tendered to USPS. Claims for those go to USPS instead.

Deadlines that differ by carrier

Shipsurance claims close 120 days from dispatch. Canada Post claims close 90 days from dispatch. Evri claims must be raised within 28 days of receipt. Miss one and the coverage may not help.

How do Etsy sellers add shipping insurance?

  1. Pick the label with coverage in mind. Compare included coverage before you choose a service, especially on higher-value orders.
  2. Add Shipsurance when the item is worth more. Add it when you buy the label in Shop Manager.
  3. Cover labels bought elsewhere. If part of your shipping runs outside Etsy, use carrier coverage or a separate policy.

Third-party shipping insurance (InsureShip)

Established in 2012, InsureShip is licensed by the California Department of Insurance, license #0G55434, licensed in all 50 states, and backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best. Its coverage is written for loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy, up to $5,000 per shipment, and InsureShip handles the claims. InsureShip is integrated with Etsy (built with RapidFulfillment). Contact InsureShip to turn it on and choose which shipments to insure.

Your own store

If you also run a Shopify or WooCommerce shop, InsureShip can offer buyers shipping insurance at checkout there. It is also integrated with Checkout Champ, BigCommerce, Wix and many other platforms (see all integrations), plus a custom API.

How do you turn on InsureShip for Etsy?

  1. Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your Etsy seller account.
  2. We enable the integration for your store. The Etsy integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
  3. Choose which shipments to insure. Pick the Etsy orders you want covered, such as orders above a set value.
  4. Sellers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.

How do you file a claim on an Etsy shipment?

Shipsurance add-on: go to Shop Manager > Orders, select the order, open the ellipsis (…) menu and choose “File Insurance Claim.” Etsy says: “Claims must be filed no later than 120 days from the dispatch date.” For lost parcels, wait 20 days (domestic) or 40 days (international). File before you cancel the order.

Included carrier coverage:

  • USPS: file at usps.com/help/claims.htm. For a lost package, wait at least 7 days after the estimated delivery date. For damage, file once tracking shows “Delivered.”
  • UPS: file at ups.com under Support > File a Claim, using the same email as your Etsy shop.
  • FedEx: Ground Economy claims go by email on FedEx's claim form; other services use FedEx's online claims page.

InsureShip coverage: file at /pages/file-claim. Label tracking updates the Etsy order automatically (Etsy Help: USPS labels), so save a copy of the order page along with photos and proof of value.
