Key takeaways
- InsureShip is integrated with BigCommerce (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.
- BigCommerce has no native buyer-facing insurance. Protection apps on its App Marketplace fill the gap.
- Order-level fees show as their own line below shipping, so insurance no longer has to be a fake "digital product."
- A fee is just a price line. Before you call it insurance, know which licensed company insures the shipment.
- Make the insurance line opt-in: add the fee only after the shopper ticks the box.
- InsureShip handles claims online, with coverage up to $5,000 per shipment.
Does BigCommerce include shipping insurance?
Not for shoppers. We found no native, buyer-facing shipping insurance in BigCommerce documentation. Merchants who want a checkout option usually install an app from the App Marketplace.
Read those listings closely. As of October 2026, the Simply Shipping Protection listing costs $19/month and states that its provider is "NOT an insurance company." That is an honest disclosure. It also tells you to ask a second question: if the app is not the insurer, who pays a claim, and under what policy?

How do you add shipping insurance to BigCommerce?
- Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your BigCommerce store.
- We enable the integration for your store. The BigCommerce integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
- Choose an opt-in checkout presentation. Pick how the offer appears in your BigCommerce checkout. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer.
- Customers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.
Background: how a checkout fee works on BigCommerce
For reference, BigCommerce's Checkout Fees API (POST v3/checkouts/{checkoutId}/fees) adds a fee with a name, type custom_fee, a display_name, the cost and a source, and orders can be read back from v2/orders with ?include=fees. However the line is added, it should appear only after the shopper ticks an unchecked box, be labeled "Shipping insurance," and sit next to a link to the policy terms.
How do BigCommerce order-level fees behave?
| Behavior | What it means for insurance |
|---|---|
| Up to 5 fees per order | Insurance takes one slot. Check what other fees (handling, packaging) already use. |
| Shown as a separate line below shipping | Shoppers see exactly what they pay for coverage. That supports clear disclosure. |
| Can be marked taxable | Ask your tax adviser how an insurance charge should be treated in your states. |
| Kept separate from discounts | A coupon will not quietly zero out the insurance line. |
| Replaces the old "digital product" workaround | Insurance no longer inflates product counts or skews product reports. |
How do claims work with InsureShip?
When a BigCommerce order goes missing or arrives broken, the claim goes to InsureShip, not to the platform.
- File online. Customers or merchants file at /pages/file-claim.
- InsureShip handles the claim. Your support team does not have to adjudicate it.
- Coverage up to $5,000 per shipment.
- Established in 2012. InsureShip is backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.
- Loss, damage and theft are covered, including porch piracy.
What are the checkout best practices on BigCommerce?
- Opt-in, unchecked by default. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. Several consumer class actions allege that pre-selected shipping protection toggles were added without clear consent. See our lawsuits tracker. These are allegations, not rulings.
- Call it insurance only if it is insurance. A fee you configure is not by itself an insurance policy. Read fake shipping insurance risks.
- Link the terms and say who insures the shipment.
- Match every storefront. On multi-storefront stores, use the same wording on each channel.
Which BigCommerce webhooks matter for insured orders?
Background: the integration needs to know when an insured order is created, shipped, changed or refunded. These are the BigCommerce events involved:
| Webhook | Why it matters |
|---|---|
store/order/created |
Captures the order and its insurance fee. |
store/order/statusUpdated |
Flags cancellations before shipment. |
store/order/refund/created |
Lets you reconcile refunds against coverage. |
store/shipment/created, updated, deleted
|
Provides tracking data that supports a claim. |
Multi-storefront merchants should also review BigCommerce's channel-specific webhooks so each storefront's orders are tracked.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. InsureShip is integrated with BigCommerce (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.
Can I add shipping insurance as a checkout fee on BigCommerce?
Yes. BigCommerce order-level fees let an integration add a separate fee line at checkout through the Checkout Fees API. Package protection is one of the use cases BigCommerce lists.
Is a BigCommerce checkout fee the same as insurance?
No. A fee is a price line. It becomes part of an insurance product only when a licensed insurer or agency stands behind it under a policy. Ask who insures the shipment.
Should the shipping insurance box be pre-checked?
We recommend an unchecked box. Several class actions allege problems with pre-selected shipping protection toggles. This is general information, not legal advice.
How does a customer file a claim?
Online at the InsureShip file-claim page. InsureShip handles the claim, with coverage up to $5,000 per shipment for loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy.
