Shift4Shop Shipping Insurance

Shift4Shop can charge for "insurance" out of the box. The real question is who insures the package.

See all integrations
Quick answer: Yes, Shift4Shop (formerly 3dcart) has a native shipping insurance setting with order-value tiers that can be optional or required. But that setting only adds a charge at checkout. It does not by itself insure anything, so you need to know which licensed company covers the shipment. InsureShip is integrated with Shift4Shop (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.

Key takeaways

  • InsureShip is integrated with Shift4Shop (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.
  • Shift4Shop's own insurance setting lives under Settings > Shipping > More Options > Insurance.
  • Each tier sets an order-value range, a flat or percentage price, and whether it is Required.
  • Optional tiers show the shopper a checkbox. Keep insurance optional.
  • The setting prices insurance. It does not say who insures. If nobody does, you may be the one paying claims.
  • It does not work with multi-address shipping.

Does Shift4Shop include shipping insurance?

It includes a setting called insurance. Shift4 acquired 3dcart in November 2020 and rebranded it Shift4Shop, and the feature carried over. Here is how it is configured:

Field What it does
Min and Max The order-value range for the tier, such as $0 to $100.
Price The insurance charge for that range.
% checkbox Turns the price into a percentage of the order total. Without it, the price is flat.
Required checkbox Makes the charge mandatory for that range. Unchecked, it is optional for the customer.

A store fee or an insurance policy: who actually insures?

This is the most important point on this page. The Shift4Shop setting decides what the shopper pays. Its documentation describes pricing and does not name an insurer. The setting is a pricing tool, not a policy.

Store-configured insurance fee

You set the price. Money goes to you. If a package is lost and no policy stands behind the fee, you decide whether to pay, and you pay from your own pocket.

Licensed insurance policy

A licensed insurer or agency covers the shipment under written terms. With InsureShip, claims are filed online and handled by InsureShip. Established in 2012, InsureShip is licensed by the California Department of Insurance (license #0G55434), licensed in all 50 states, and backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.

Whether a product counts as insurance is decided by state law and regulators, based on what it does, not its label. If you charge for "insurance" with no insurer behind it, read fake shipping insurance risks before you go further. This is general information, not legal advice.

How do you add InsureShip shipping insurance to Shift4Shop?

  1. Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your Shift4Shop store.
  2. We enable the integration for your store. The Shift4Shop integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
  3. Choose an opt-in checkout presentation. Pick how the offer appears in your Shift4Shop checkout. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer.
  4. Customers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.

Background: working with Shift4Shop's native insurance setting

For reference, review your current insurance tiers first: note every range, price and whether any tier is Required. Uncheck Required on every tier, since optional tiers show the shopper a checkbox and leave the choice to them. Link the policy terms near the checkbox and name who insures the shipment. When we turn the integration on, we confirm whether your native setting stays as the customer-facing line. Shift4Shop also offers webhooks (Modules > Webhook) that send new-order and order-status-change events as JSON or XML. Test the edge cases below before launch.

What Shift4Shop edge cases should you test?

  • Multi-address orders: the insurance feature "is not compatible with the ability to ship to multiple addresses."
  • Auto Select Shipping: insurance is hidden when only one shipping method applies and Auto Select Shipping is on. Shoppers on those orders never see the choice.
  • Free shipping: insurance still appears when it applies, even if free shipping is shown.
  • Default state: a Shift4Shop user idea asks for an opt-out (pre-checked) mode, which suggests optional mode is opt-in today. Confirm in a test checkout.

How do claims work with InsureShip?

Where to file

Online at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles the claim from there.

What is covered

Loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy, up to $5,000 per shipment.

Your Shift4Shop store keeps the order record. InsureShip keeps the claim. Established in 2012, InsureShip is backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.

What are the checkout best practices on Shift4Shop?

  • Never use Required for insurance unless your counsel approves it, and never pre-check it. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. Several class actions allege pre-selected shipping protection was charged without clear consent; see our lawsuits tracker.
  • Keep the label honest: "Shipping insurance" only when a policy backs it.
  • Check the warning signs in our scams resource center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Shift4Shop have built-in shipping insurance?

It has a built-in shipping insurance setting under Settings, Shipping, More Options, Insurance. You set value tiers with a flat or percentage price and choose whether each tier is required or optional.

Does the Shift4Shop insurance setting insure my packages?

Not by itself. The setting adds a charge at checkout. Unless a licensed insurer or agency covers the shipment under a policy, nobody but you stands behind that charge.

Is InsureShip integrated with Shift4Shop?

Yes. InsureShip is integrated with Shift4Shop (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.

Should I make shipping insurance required on Shift4Shop?

We recommend optional tiers, so the shopper sees an unchecked box and chooses. This is general information, not legal advice.

Why does the insurance option not appear on some orders?

The feature is not compatible with multi-address shipping, and it is hidden when only one shipping method applies with Auto Select Shipping turned on.
