- Ecwid is a store builder that embeds into an existing website.
- Ecwid and Lightspeed eCom (E-Series) are different products. Confirm which one you run.
- Checkout surcharges are a pricing tool. They do not insure a shipment on their own.
- Confirm that any surcharge you use can be optional for the shopper before you call it insurance.
- InsureShip claims are filed online, with coverage up to $5,000 per shipment.
Ecwid or Lightspeed eCom: which one do you run?
This matters more than it sounds. Lightspeed owns Ecwid, and it also sells a separate product called Lightspeed eCom (E-Series). They handle checkout charges differently.
Ecwid by Lightspeed
A SaaS store builder you embed into your current site. Merchants can configure checkout surcharges. Check the current options in your Ecwid control panel.
Lightspeed eCom (E-Series)
Has "eCom custom charges." They are stored as ECOM_CUSTOM_CHARGE sale adjustments, exposed read-only in the X-Series API, and not included in total_price.
If you are on E-Series, an integration has to read those adjustments separately to know whether a shopper paid for insurance. This page covers Ecwid.
Does Ecwid include shipping insurance?
We found no native buyer-facing shipping insurance in Ecwid. Public detail on Ecwid's fee and webhook features is thin, so treat the setup as something to confirm in your own account, not something to assume.

How do you add shipping insurance to Ecwid?
- Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your Ecwid store.
- We enable the integration for your store. The Ecwid integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
- Choose an opt-in checkout presentation. Pick how the offer appears in your Ecwid checkout. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer.
- Customers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.
Background: Ecwid checkout surcharges
For reference, first confirm which platform you run (Ecwid or Lightspeed eCom) and your plan. Ecwid merchants can configure checkout surcharges. Check whether a surcharge can be optional for the shopper or applies to every order. Insurance should never be forced or pre-selected, and it should be labeled "Shipping insurance," with the terms linked.
Questions to answer before you launch
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can the shopper decline the charge? | Opt-in is the standard we recommend. Several class actions allege pre-selected protection; see our lawsuits tracker. |
| Who insures the shipment? | A surcharge you set up collects money. It does not create a policy. |
| Does the charge show on the order record? | Claims and reporting need proof the shopper bought coverage. |
| Does the wording match your main site? | Ecwid sits inside a site you already run. Your shipping and returns pages should describe coverage the same way. |
How do claims work with InsureShip?
The claim never runs through Ecwid by Lightspeed. It runs through InsureShip:
- File online. Customers or merchants file at /pages/file-claim.
- InsureShip handles the claim. Your support team does not have to adjudicate it.
- Coverage up to $5,000 per shipment.
- Established in 2009. InsureShip is backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.
- Loss, damage and theft are covered, including porch piracy.
What are the checkout best practices on Ecwid?
- Unchecked by default. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. The shopper opts in.
- Plain wording. Say "Shipping insurance," not a vague product name.
- Terms linked beside the choice, naming who insures. Read fake shipping insurance risks.
- Vet any app with the questions in our scams resource center.
