Wix eCommerce Shipping Insurance

Wix names shipping insurance as an example for its Additional Fees plugin. Here is how to do it right.

Quick answer: InsureShip is integrated with Wix eCommerce (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store. Wix eCommerce does not add buyer-facing shipping insurance by itself. Wix Shipping labels have an insurance default for the seller, and Wix checkout supports additional fees, including an app-level Additional Fees service plugin that names shipping insurance as an example.

Key takeaways

  • InsureShip is integrated with Wix eCommerce (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.
  • Label insurance protects you on labels you buy. It is not something the shopper chooses at checkout.
  • Wix offers two fee paths: merchant-set additional fees and an app-level service plugin.
  • The plugin path is the one that can react to the cart, which you need for an opt-in choice.
  • If the plugin does not answer within 3 seconds, Wix proceeds without the fee. Plan for that.
  • A fee line is not insurance by itself. Know who insures the shipment.

Does Wix eCommerce include shipping insurance?

Only on the seller side. When you print labels with Wix Shipping, you can "Select an insurance default," and label claims go through Shippo and Shipsurance. Wix Shipping is available in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany and Spain.

That coverage is tied to labels you buy through Wix. It does not create an insurance line your customer sees or chooses at checkout. Wix's App Market lists third-party apps for that job.

Which Wix fee option fits shipping insurance?

Merchant additional fees Additional Fees service plugin
Who sets it up You, in the Wix dashboard An app or integration
Fee type Percentage or fixed Calculated by the app
When it runs Per your settings On cart view, checkout, cart changes and shipping changes
Line item Shown at checkout Separate line; can be taxable; can link to specific items
Best for Simple surcharges Insurance that reacts to cart value and shopper choice

Wix's developer docs list shipping insurance as an example use case for the service plugin. Fees from the plugin "are included in the final order."

How do you add shipping insurance to Wix eCommerce?

  1. Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your Wix store.
  2. We enable the integration for your store. The Wix integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
  3. Choose an opt-in checkout presentation. Pick how the offer appears in your Wix checkout. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer.
  4. Customers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.

Background: why the plugin path suits an opt-in offer on Wix

For reference, on Wix the Additional Fees service plugin is the fee option that can respond to the cart and to the shopper's choice. Done well, it returns no fee until the shopper opts in, names the line "Shipping insurance," and sits next to a link to the policy terms.

What does the 3-second rule mean for your store?

Wix calls the plugin's Calculate Additional Fees method and waits up to 3 seconds. If no answer arrives, Wix proceeds without the fee. For insurance, that has two consequences:

  • The calculation must be fast and simple. Keep pricing logic light.
  • An order can complete without the insurance line. Your reporting should insure only orders where the fee is actually on the final order, so the shopper is never told they have coverage they did not buy.
Check the final order, not the cart. Fees are recalculated as the cart and shipping change.

How do claims work with InsureShip?

The claim never runs through Wix eCommerce. It runs through InsureShip:

  1. File online. Customers or merchants file at /pages/file-claim.
  2. InsureShip handles the claim. Your support team does not have to adjudicate it.
  3. Coverage up to $5,000 per shipment.
  4. Established in 2012. InsureShip is backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.
  5. Loss, damage and theft are covered, including porch piracy.

What are the checkout best practices on Wix?

  • Leave it unchecked. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. Several class actions allege pre-selected shipping protection was added without clear consent. See the lawsuits tracker.
  • Say "insurance" only when a licensed insurer stands behind it. A fee you configure in the cart does not insure anything by itself.
  • Vet any App Market option. Ask who the insurer is. Our scams resource center lists the questions.
  • Keep label insurance separate in your mind. It covers your labels, not your customer's purchase choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is InsureShip integrated with Wix eCommerce?

Yes. InsureShip is integrated with Wix eCommerce (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.

Is Wix Shipping label insurance the same as checkout insurance?

No. The Wix Shipping insurance default applies to labels you buy, with claims through Shippo and Shipsurance. Checkout insurance is a choice your customer makes when they buy.

What is the Wix Additional Fees service plugin?

It lets an app calculate fees on cart view, checkout and cart or shipping changes. Each fee is its own line and can be taxable. Wix names shipping insurance as an example use case.

What happens if the fee app is slow?

Wix waits up to 3 seconds. If the app does not respond, checkout proceeds without the fee, so that order would not include the insurance line.

How do claims work?

Claims are filed online at the InsureShip file-claim page and handled by InsureShip. Coverage goes up to $5,000 per shipment for loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy.
