Key takeaways
- Ship with Walmart protections apply only to Ship with Walmart labels. Labels made with Bring Your Own Account are excluded.
- Covered events are lost in transit and lost after delivery, up to $100 per qualifying order. Packages damaged in transit are listed as ineligible.
- Walmart says the protections are “not insurance” and can be changed or withdrawn.
- For shipments valued over $100, optional declared value protection may be available, depending on the carrier.
- InsureShip is integrated with Walmart Marketplace (built with RapidFulfillment), so shipments for your marketplace orders can be insured. Marketplaces control their own checkout, so this is seller-side coverage, not a buyer add-on.
What does Walmart Marketplace already cover?
Walmart's protection program is called Ship with Walmart (SWW) seller protections. Here is the policy as of October 2026.
| Topic | Walmart's policy | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Covered events | Eligible orders reported lost in transit or lost after delivery. | SWW seller protections |
| Amount | “Walmart won’t seek reimbursement from you for up to $100 per qualifying order.” The policy says you may be charged the difference if the refund is higher. | SWW seller protections |
| Conditions | You shipped on or before the Ship By date; your account is in good standing; your account is configured for seamless returns; you aren't disputing that return with the customer. | SWW seller protections |
| Not covered | Packages damaged in transit; orders without an SWW label; incorrectly packaged or labeled orders; non-compliant, prohibited or restricted items; label charges and other fulfillment fees; Bring Your Own Account labels. | SWW seller protections |
| Over $100 | “optional declared value protection may be available for Ship with Walmart shipments valued over $100.” It depends on the carrier and isn't available cross-border. | SWW seller protections |
| Cross-border | The $100 limit includes duties and applies only to lost-in-transit claims. Lost after delivery and damage are not covered. | SWW seller protections |
“They’re not insurance, are not guaranteed, and may be modified or withdrawn at Walmart’s discretion.”— Walmart Marketplace, Ship with Walmart seller protections policy, as of October 2026
Where do gaps remain for Walmart sellers?
The SWW program is clear about its limits. Each one is a place to plan ahead.
Damage in transit
The policy lists packages damaged in transit as ineligible. If you ship fragile goods, you need another layer for breakage.
Order value above $100
Walmart won't seek reimbursement up to $100 per qualifying order. Above that, you may be charged the difference unless declared value or other coverage applies.
Your own carrier account
Bring Your Own Account labels and orders without an SWW label are excluded. If you ship from a multichannel tool with your own rates, those orders sit outside the program.
Cross-border orders
Cross-border SWW orders are covered only for lost in transit, with duties counted inside the $100 limit. Declared value isn't available cross-border.
How do Walmart sellers add shipping insurance?
- Stay inside SWW where it fits. Use SWW labels, ship by the Ship By date, keep your account in good standing and turn on seamless returns.
- Add declared value above $100. Where the carrier offers it on SWW shipments, declared value is Walmart's stated option for higher-value orders.
- Use carrier coverage on your own labels. If you ship on your own carrier account, check that carrier's included liability and what extra coverage costs.
- Add third-party coverage for the rest. Damage, theft and high-value orders are the usual reasons sellers look at a separate policy.
Third-party shipping insurance (InsureShip)
Established in 2009, InsureShip is licensed by the California Department of Insurance, license #0G55434, licensed in all 50 states, and backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best. Its coverage is written for loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy, up to $5,000 per shipment, and InsureShip handles the claims. InsureShip is integrated with Walmart Marketplace (built with RapidFulfillment). Contact InsureShip to turn it on and choose which shipments to insure.
Multichannel sellers
If you also sell on your own site, InsureShip is integrated at checkout with Shopify, WooCommerce, Checkout Champ, BigCommerce and many other platforms (see all integrations), plus a custom API. That lets buyers on your site choose coverage while your Walmart orders follow Walmart's rules.
How do you turn on InsureShip for Walmart Marketplace?
- Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your Walmart Marketplace seller account.
- We enable the integration for your store. The Walmart Marketplace integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
- Choose which shipments to insure. Pick the Walmart Marketplace orders you want covered, such as orders above a set value.
- Sellers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.
How do you file a claim on a Walmart shipment?
For SWW labels, Walmart offers a Shipment Protection API for sellers on the U.S. marketplace. Walmart's developer docs list three claim types: lost in transit (LIT), lost after delivery (LAD) and damaged. Statuses include INITIATED, IN_REVIEW, NEED_INFO, APPROVED and REJECTED. The docs add: “Only shipments created with SWW labels are covered by automatic protection.” Because the seller protections policy lists damage in transit as ineligible, ask Walmart how a damaged claim on your SWW label will be handled.
- Carrier coverage on your own labels: file with the carrier under its rules.
- InsureShip coverage: file online at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles the claim.
- Records to keep: Walmart order number, Ship By date and the actual ship date, label type (SWW or your own), tracking, proof of value and packing photos.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ship with Walmart seller protection insurance?
No. Walmart says the protections are not insurance, are not guaranteed, and may be modified or withdrawn at Walmart's discretion.
What is the Walmart Marketplace limit for lost packages?
Walmart won't seek reimbursement from you for up to $100 per qualifying order reported lost in transit or lost after delivery. For cross-border orders, the $100 includes duties and only lost-in-transit claims qualify.
Does Walmart cover items damaged in transit?
Not under the SWW seller protections. The policy lists packages damaged in transit as ineligible.
What if I ship Walmart orders with my own carrier account?
Labels made with Bring Your Own Account, and orders without a Ship with Walmart label, are excluded from SWW seller protections. Those shipments rely on carrier coverage or a separate policy.
Can InsureShip cover my Walmart Marketplace orders?
Yes. InsureShip is integrated with Walmart Marketplace (built with RapidFulfillment), so shipments for your marketplace orders can be insured. Marketplaces control their own checkout, so this is seller-side coverage, not a buyer add-on.
