Is Extend Shipping Protection Insurance? What Its Terms Say (2026)
What Extend's shipping protection guide and terms say about the policy, the insurer, your status as a loss payee, and how claims are paid.
Back to the resource centerKey takeaways
- Extend names the policyholder (Extend, Inc.), the insurer (Overtime Insurance Solutions Corporation) and the producing agency (Extend Insurance Agency, Inc.).
- Shoppers are not insureds, but Extend names them as loss payees, meaning reimbursement is directed to the shopper.
- Hawaii's captive insurance list shows Overtime Insurance Solutions Corporation as an active captive, licensed January 1, 2021.
- Extend says it "administers shipping protection on behalf of the retailer," and approved lost or stolen claims may be paid by gift card.
- Two 2026 lawsuits named Extend. One was dismissed by the plaintiffs with no ruling on the merits; the other is open, with allegations not public to us.
What does Extend say about its product?
These are Extend's own words, as of October 2026.
“Eligible shipments are insured under a cargo insurance policy (the "Extend Policy") issued to Extend, Inc. by Overtime Insurance Solutions Corporation and produced through Extend Insurance Agency, Inc. While you are not an insured under the Extend Policy, any reimbursement will be directed to you as a loss payee. Shipping protection may not be available in all jurisdictions. Extend and EIA may earn commission or other compensation in connection with making coverage available for eligible shipments under the Extend Policy.”— Extend Shipping Protection Guide, extend.com/shipping-protection-guide
“The information in this Extend Shipping Protection Guide is only a summary of the full Marine Open Cargo Policy underwritten for Extend, Inc.”— Extend Shipping Protection Guide, extend.com
“Extend administers shipping protection on behalf of the retailer.”— Extend Shipping Protection Guide FAQ, extend.com
Extend's Terms of Use contain similar language, adding that coverage "is governed by the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions set forth in the Extend Policy." (The English terms page lists versions dated October 10, 2023 and June 19, 2024; the shipping protection language is the same in both.)
What "loss payee" means for you
The policy is a contract between Extend, Inc. and its insurer. You are not a party to it. Naming you as a loss payee means that when a claim is paid, the money (or value) is directed to you. Your path is Extend's claims process: Extend's guide says to "contact Extend online 24/7," and that after approval of a lost or stolen claim "you may receive a gift card for the value of the product (plus shipping costs and taxes)." For damage, it says "a full or partial refund via a gift card may be provided or the product may be repaired," and in some cases a replacement is shipped.

Is Extend's shipping protection regulated as insurance?
Extend presents its program as insurance and names the insurer and agency. Whether a product is insurance, and how it must be licensed, is decided by state law. Regulators' general alerts, which name no company, tell shoppers to look for licensing:
“Legitimate shipping coverage providers will be licensed as insurance companies or insurance agents.”— Utah Insurance Department consumer alert, March 20, 2024, insurance.utah.gov
What public records show about the insurer
The Hawaii Insurance Division's "Recap of Captives" (as of June 30, 2026) lists "Overtime Insurance Solutions Corporation" as an active captive with a license date of January 1, 2021, in class 2, which the list defines as "Pure; writes direct and/or reinsurers." We have not verified the producer license of Extend Insurance Agency, Inc.
If you want to understand how this applies to you, these are fair questions to ask Extend: Is the Extend Policy available in my state, and on what basis? Which state licenses Extend Insurance Agency, Inc., and what is its license number? You can check producer licenses through your state insurance department, and use our 10 questions to ask any provider. This is general information, not legal advice.
