UltraCart Shipping Insurance
Use UltraCart's pre-checkout upsells to offer licensed shipping insurance, and learn why UltraCart's "Package Insurance Value" isn't the same thing.

Key takeaways
- UltraCart's "Package Insurance Value" sets signature-required thresholds. It doesn't sell insurance to buyers.
- Pre-checkout upsells appear after the shopper clicks checkout but before payment details, and are triggered by cart contents or item tags.
- UltraCart already lists warranty and protection plans as an upsell offer type.
- InsureShip is integrated with UltraCart (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.
- Present insurance as a clear, declinable choice.
Does UltraCart include shipping insurance?
Not for buyers. UltraCart is a hosted cart and checkout with a strong API, used by direct-to-consumer and info-product sellers. It does have a field called Package Insurance Value, which can confuse merchants. Per UltraCart's docs, it's based on cost of goods and drives when a shipment requires a signature. It isn't a policy, and no one files a claim against it.
UltraCart Package Insurance Value
An internal value used for signature-required rules. Not offered to shoppers.
InsureShip shipping insurance
An insurance product the shopper can choose. Covers loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy, up to $5,000 per shipment.
How do you add shipping insurance to UltraCart?
- Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your UltraCart store.
- We enable the integration for your store. The UltraCart integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
- Choose an opt-in checkout presentation. Pick how the offer appears in your UltraCart checkout. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer.
- Customers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.
Background: how a pre-checkout insurance upsell works in UltraCart
UltraCart's pre-checkout upsell guide says the feature is "included in every UltraCart plan" and that offers "appear after customers click the checkout button but before they enter payment details." That moment, right before payment, is when shipping risk is on the buyer's mind.
- Create an insurance item in UltraCart for the coverage price. See pricing for how InsureShip prices coverage.
-
Tag your shippable items. Use an item tag such as
ships-physical. - Build a pre-checkout upsell rule that triggers on that tag. Digital products then never see the offer.
- Write the offer honestly. Use a template, name it "Shipping insurance," show the price, link the terms, and make "No thanks" as easy to click as "Add."
- Pick the display location in your StoreFront settings.
- Test a cart with and without physical items.
If you'd rather offer coverage after purchase, UltraCart also supports custom "Upsell After" sequences. Pre-checkout is usually simpler, since insurance then rides on the original order.
How do UltraCart order stages and webhooks fit in?
UltraCart orders move through stages, documented in its Order Management docs, and UltraCart provides webhooks for order events. Background: the InsureShip integration:
- Listens for new orders and checks for the insurance item.
- Waits until the order reaches a shipped stage with tracking, so the policy record matches the real shipment.
- Notes orders refunded or rejected before shipping.
We confirm the exact events and stage names for your UltraCart configuration when we turn the integration on.
Checkout best practices for an insurance upsell
- Let the shopper choose. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. An upsell screen is opt-in by nature; keep it that way. Don't add insurance automatically and make the buyer remove it. Several class actions allege that pre-selected shipping protection toggles charged shoppers without consent. These are allegations, but they show where disputes start. Track them in our lawsuit tracker.
- Call it insurance, not a vague "guarantee," and link the policy terms.
- Check the upsell on mobile. Upsell templates with images and video can push the decline button off screen.
- Subscriptions: if insurance renews with auto-ship orders, say so in the offer. ROSCA requires online sellers using a negative option to "clearly and conspicuously disclose[] all material terms of the transaction before obtaining the consumer's billing information." This is general information, not legal advice.
How do claims work with InsureShip?
If an insured package is lost, damaged or stolen, including porch piracy, the claim is filed online at /pages/file-claim and InsureShip handles it. Coverage runs up to $5,000 per shipment. Established in 2012, InsureShip is licensed by the California Department of Insurance (license #0G55434), licensed in all 50 states, and backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is UltraCart's Package Insurance Value the same as shipping insurance?
No. UltraCart's docs describe it as a cost-of-goods-based value that drives signature-required thresholds. It isn't coverage a shopper buys.
Is InsureShip integrated with UltraCart?
Yes. InsureShip is integrated with UltraCart (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.
Are pre-checkout upsells available on my UltraCart plan?
UltraCart says pre-checkout upsells are included in every plan, with no upgrade or add-on required.
How do I keep the insurance offer off digital products?
Tag your shippable items and trigger the upsell rule on that tag, so carts with only digital items never see it.
What does InsureShip cover?
Loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy, up to $5,000 per shipment, with claims filed online and handled by InsureShip.
