Magento and Adobe Commerce Shipping Insurance
InsureShip is integrated with Magento and Adobe Commerce. One rule still applies: the shopper chooses the coverage, and it shows as its own line in the totals.

- Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce have no native, buyer-facing insurance option of their own.
- Third-party protection extensions are listed on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace. Check who the insurer is before you install one.
- Background: Adobe Commerce can add fees through an out-of-process totals collector webhook backed by an App Builder action.
- Background: Open Source stores add fees with a module that adds a quote and order total.
- Fees added by the webhook carry through to invoices, credit memos and emails.
Do Magento and Adobe Commerce include shipping insurance?
No. We found no shipping insurance option for shoppers in Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce. Magento Open Source is the free, self-hosted PHP edition. Adobe Commerce is the licensed edition, offered on-premises, on Cloud (PaaS), and as Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service (SaaS).
Merchants who want a checkout option usually turn to the Adobe Commerce Marketplace. For example, one product and shipping protection extension lists support for Open Source 2.4 and Adobe Commerce 2.4. Before you install any extension, ask whether the product is insurance, which licensed company stands behind it, and who pays claims.

Background: how checkout fees work in Magento and Adobe Commerce
For reference, these are the two platform routes for a checkout fee line. Adobe Commerce stores can use the App Builder checkout starter kit. Open Source stores, and Adobe Commerce stores that prefer in-process code, use a PHP totals module. In both, an unchecked box stores the shopper’s choice on the quote, and the fee is added only when that choice is yes. On Adobe Commerce, the webhook returns a fee with a stable code such as shipping_insurance, a clear label and a base_fee.
Background: how does the Adobe Commerce custom-fees webhook work?
Adobe’s checkout starter kit documents an out-of-process totals collector. It runs during totals collection, after shipping and discounts are computed, and only when the cart has items.
| Piece | What it is |
|---|---|
| Webhook |
plugin.magento.out_of_process_totals_collector.api.get_total_modifications.custom_fees, type after
|
| Response | A JSON Patch replace on result/fees. Each fee has code, optional label and base_fee. Fees of zero or less are ignored. |
| PaaS registration | In webhooks.xml, pointing at your App Builder action |
| SaaS registration | In the Admin, with the same method name, type and fields |
| Where the fee shows | Luma checkout, GraphQL CartPrices.custom_fees, admin order, invoice and credit memo views, and the matching emails |
Adobe recommends webhook signature verification. Because an opt-in fee must disappear when the shopper unticks the box, have the action read the stored choice and return no fee when it is off.
Order flow. In Adobe’s words, “orders become invoices, and invoices become shipments.” An order moves to Complete when the shipment is booked. Statuses include pending, processing, complete, closed, canceled, holded and fraud. Report coverage on shipped orders, and watch for canceled ones.
How do claims work with InsureShip?
Whatever runs your Magento checkout, the claim itself happens outside it. A Magento admin never has to open a credit memo just to settle a lost parcel.
- File online at our claim page. InsureShip handles the claim from there.
- Up to $5,000 per shipment.
- Loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy.
- Licensed. InsureShip is licensed by the California Department of Insurance, license #0G55434, and licensed in all 50 states. Established in 2009, it is backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.
What are the checkout best practices for Magento and Adobe Commerce?
How you present the option matters as much as the code behind it.
- Unchecked by default. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. The shopper opts in. Several class-action complaints allege that pre-selected shipping protection toggles charged shoppers without clear consent. Those are allegations, not rulings; see our lawsuits tracker for status.
- Say “shipping insurance.” Avoid vague names, and show the price before the shopper pays.
- Link the terms right next to the checkbox, and say who insures the shipment.
- Keep it on its own line in totals, confirmation emails and invoices. Do not fold it into shipping or handling.
- Test the credit memo path. Decide whether a refund for an unshipped order also refunds the insurance fee, and check that the fee shows correctly on the credit memo.
Whether a product counts as insurance is decided by state law and regulators, based on what it does, not what it is called. Read the risks of fake shipping insurance and our shipping insurance scams resource center. This is general information, not legal advice.
