Key takeaways

  • InsureShip is integrated with Shopware (integration built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment). Contact us to turn it on for your store.
  • Shopware 6 core has no buyer-facing shipping insurance of its own.
  • Background: plugins change the cart through a collector (gathers data) and a processor (applies changes).
  • At least one Store extension preselects its insurance checkbox by default. Check that setting on anything you install.
  • InsureShip handles claims online, up to $5,000 per shipment.

Does Shopware include shipping insurance?

No. Shopware 6, the German PHP and Symfony platform, has no shipping insurance in core. Extensions in the Shopware Store fill the gap. One, for example, adds a percentage-of-cart insurance charge per sales channel.

Check the default. As of October 2026, that extension’s Store listing says its insurance checkbox is preselected by default, with a “Preselection” setting that controls it. Whatever extension you use, find that setting and turn preselection off so shoppers opt in.

How do you add shipping insurance to Shopware?

  1. Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your Shopware store.
  2. We enable the integration for your store. The Shopware integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
  3. Choose an opt-in checkout presentation. Pick how the offer appears in your Shopware checkout. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. Check that the box is unchecked on every sales channel.
  4. Customers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.

Background: how do Shopware cart collectors, processors and webhooks fit together?

Piece Interface or event Role for insurance
Collector CartDataCollectorInterface, tag shopware.cart.collector Fetch the opt-in flag and price once
Processor CartProcessorInterface, tag shopware.cart.processor Add the insurance line to $toCalculate
Order webhook checkout.order.placed Capture new insured orders
Delivery states state_enter.order_delivery.state.shipped, shipped_partially, returned Know when coverage starts and when parcels come back
Payment state state_enter.order_transaction.state.refunded Reconcile refunds

Shopware’s docs warn: “Do not query data in the process method, since it may be executed a lot of times.” Load prices in the collector, not the processor.

How do claims work with InsureShip?

Shopware only collects the charge. The claim runs through InsureShip. Your Shopware administration stays out of it.

  • File online at our claim page. InsureShip handles the claim from there.
  • Up to $5,000 per shipment.
  • Loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy.
  • Licensed. InsureShip is licensed by the California Department of Insurance, license #0G55434, and licensed in all 50 states. Established in 2012, it is backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.

What are the checkout best practices for Shopware?

The add-on should be easy to choose and just as easy to skip.

  • Unchecked by default. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. The shopper opts in. Several class-action complaints allege that pre-selected shipping protection toggles charged shoppers without clear consent. Those are allegations, not rulings; see our lawsuits tracker for status.
  • Say “shipping insurance.” Avoid vague names, and show the price before the shopper pays.
  • Link the terms right next to the checkbox, and say who insures the shipment.
  • Keep it on its own line in totals, confirmation emails and invoices. Do not fold it into shipping or handling.
  • Check every sales channel. Settings can differ per channel. Confirm the box is unchecked on each one.

Whether a product counts as insurance is decided by state law and regulators, based on what it does, not what it is called. Read the risks of fake shipping insurance and our shipping insurance scams resource center. This is general information, not legal advice.
