osCommerce Shipping Insurance
“osCommerce” now means two different codebases. Start by knowing which one you run.

Key takeaways
- osCommerce 4 (V4) is maintained by osCommerce LTD. CE Phoenix is a separate community fork.
- We found no native shipping insurance in either one.
- The legacy osCommerce 2.x line uses
ot_*order-total modules, the same family Zen Cart inherited. - osCommerce 4 has an App Shop and a documented API. How fees work there needs confirming.
- InsureShip handles claims online, up to $5,000 per shipment.
Does osCommerce include shipping insurance?
No. osCommerce is the original open-source PHP cart, first released in 2000. We found no shipping insurance option for shoppers in its current editions.
osCommerce 4 (V4)
Maintained by osCommerce LTD in Swindon, UK. Runs on PHP 8.3, offers an App Shop with about 1,249 add-ons and an optional Enterprise edition, and has a documented API.
CE Phoenix (Phoenix Cart)
A community fork, renamed from the Community Edition, that left the osCommerce umbrella. It is at version 1.1.0.x.
InsureShip connects to osCommerce through its API or a custom integration. Contact us to scope setup for your store. We do not offer a native osCommerce extension, module or plugin today.
How do you add shipping insurance to osCommerce?
- Confirm your codebase. Check whether you run osCommerce 4, CE Phoenix or an older 2.x store. The build path differs.
- Scope with InsureShip. We agree on pricing, the order data we need and how it reaches the InsureShip API.
-
On CE Phoenix or 2.x, add an order-total module. An
ot_module can add an insurance line when the shopper ticks an unchecked box. - On osCommerce 4, check the App Shop and API. Ask your developer or osCommerce how a checkout fee is added in V4 before you design the feature.
- Report insured orders. Send InsureShip each insured order once it ships.
Which osCommerce build path fits your store?
| Codebase | Where the insurance charge lives | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy osCommerce 2.x | An ot_* order-total module |
PHP version support and checkout template changes |
| CE Phoenix | Likely the same order-total lineage | Ask the Phoenix community or your developer which hooks the 1.1 line offers |
| osCommerce 4 | An App Shop app or a custom build | How V4 adds checkout fees, and which API calls expose order and shipment data |
Because Zen Cart grew out of osCommerce, the Zen Cart pattern (an ot_ module with a checkbox) is a useful reference for older stores. It is not proof that the same code runs on V4.
How do claims work with InsureShip?
Whatever runs your osCommerce checkout, the claim itself happens outside it. That is true whichever osCommerce codebase you run.
- File online at our claim page. InsureShip handles the claim from there.
- Up to $5,000 per shipment.
- Loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy.
- Licensed. InsureShip is licensed by the California Department of Insurance, license #0G55434, and licensed in all 50 states. Established in 2012, it is backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.
What are the checkout best practices for osCommerce?
How you present the option matters as much as the code behind it.
- Unchecked by default. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. The shopper opts in. Several class-action complaints allege that pre-selected shipping protection toggles charged shoppers without clear consent. Those are allegations, not rulings; see our lawsuits tracker for status.
- Say “shipping insurance.” Avoid vague names, and show the price before the shopper pays.
- Link the terms right next to the checkbox, and say who insures the shipment.
- Keep it on its own line in totals, confirmation emails and invoices. Do not fold it into shipping or handling.
- Write it once. If you migrate from 2.x to V4 or Phoenix, carry the same opt-in wording and terms link to the new checkout.
Whether a product counts as insurance is decided by state law and regulators, based on what it does, not what it is called. Read the risks of fake shipping insurance and our shipping insurance scams resource center. This is general information, not legal advice.
