- PrestaShop core has no buyer-facing shipping insurance of its own today.
- Third-party insurance modules exist on PrestaShop Addons. Vet who stands behind each one.
- Background: PrestaShop modules listen to hooks such as
actionValidateOrderto catch new orders. - PrestaShop tried a built-in insurance module in 2012. Do not assume it still exists.
Does PrestaShop include shipping insurance?
Not in core. We found no buyer-facing insurance in the current PrestaShop software. Third-party modules are listed on the PrestaShop Addons marketplace.
There is some history here. In April 2012 PrestaShop launched a free “Prestashop Assurance” module with two insurers. The shopper paid the premium at checkout, coverage went up to €1,500, and the merchant kept 25% of the premium. We could not confirm that this module is still offered, so treat it as history, not as an option. InsureShip's model is different: InsureShip pays participating merchants advertising revenue for promoting InsureShip insurance at checkout.

How do you add shipping insurance to PrestaShop?
- Contact InsureShip. Tell us about your PrestaShop store.
- We enable the integration for your store. The PrestaShop integration was built with our fulfillment partner RapidFulfillment, so there is no API build on your side.
- Choose an opt-in checkout presentation. Pick how the offer appears in your PrestaShop checkout. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer.
- Customers file claims at /pages/file-claim. InsureShip handles every claim.
Background: how checkout add-ons work in PrestaShop
For reference, PrestaShop add-ons are PHP modules. A typical insurance option sits near the shipping step as an unchecked box labeled “Shipping insurance,” with the terms linked, and the charge is added to the cart only when the shopper opts in. Test it with your theme, taxes, carriers and any one-page checkout module you use.
Background: which PrestaShop hooks matter for insured orders?
PrestaShop modules react to events through hooks. The one most integrations start with is actionValidateOrder (alias newOrder). It is an action hook on the front office, fired from classes/PaymentModule.php when a new order is validated.

Questions to confirm when we turn the integration on: how shipping and cancellations show in your order states, how the insurance line looks on invoices, and whether the option works in every country you ship to.
How do claims work with InsureShip?
PrestaShop only collects the charge. The claim runs through InsureShip. Shoppers file without logging into your back office.
- File online at our claim page. InsureShip handles the claim from there.
- Up to $5,000 per shipment.
- Loss, damage and theft, including porch piracy.
- Licensed. InsureShip is licensed by the California Department of Insurance, license #0G55434, and licensed in all 50 states. Established in 2012, it is backed by Navigators (The Hartford), rated A+ by AM Best.
What are the checkout best practices for PrestaShop?
The add-on should be easy to choose and just as easy to skip.
- Unchecked by default. InsureShip recommends, and configures by default, an opt-in (unchecked) offer. The shopper opts in. Several class-action complaints allege that pre-selected shipping protection toggles charged shoppers without clear consent. Those are allegations, not rulings; see our lawsuits tracker for status.
- Say “shipping insurance.” Avoid vague names, and show the price before the shopper pays.
- Link the terms right next to the checkbox, and say who insures the shipment.
- Keep it on its own line in totals, confirmation emails and invoices. Do not fold it into shipping or handling.
- Translate carefully. If you sell in several languages, make sure each translation still says insurance, and links terms in that language.
Whether a product counts as insurance is decided by state law and regulators, based on what it does, not what it is called. Read the risks of fake shipping insurance and our shipping insurance scams resource center. This is general information, not legal advice.
